Which is a better type of jewelry STERLING SILVER or STAINLESS STEEL?

My boyfriend is buying me a promise ring so I want to get the best type of ring. Which would it be Stainless Steel or Sterling Silver? One minute I hear Stainless Steel and the next I hear Sterling Silver. thanks:)
